Motherboard temperature.

I recently bought a heatsink/fan to replace the crappy heatsink on my motherboard chipset. Sadly, my video card hovered too close for the fan to fit properly. So, I slapped on some thermal grease and put back the original heatsink. Here's my problem... my motherboard temperature has risen by 5 degrees celsius (to ~37C) than before this whole ordeal. And yes, I applied the correct amount of thermal grease and I have ample air circulation. Does anyone know where the motherboard temperature is actually taken? I'm guessing it's where the chipset is. Thanks in advance.
 
Actually there is nothing called the mother board temp. The mother board measures the temp of the CPU.
 
Well, the CPU actually has a thermal diode inside it to measure the CPU temp. Most motherboards have thermistors on them to measure case temp and PWM temp. So which temperature is higher and what are you using to read it?
 
I'm reading the temps in BIOS and through ASUS PC Probe. I know my temps are fine, but I was just curious where the motherboard temperature was actually taken. I was assuming it'd be under the chipset.
 
Actually there is nothing called the mother board temp. The mother board measures the temp of the CPU.

what is the system temp then? I always thought that was the motherboard temp
Depending on what program is doing the reading system temp can be anything but it generally means mobo temp

As for where the diode is ive not the foggiest

Actually what I meant by this is that the mobo temperature is in fact the system temp as you mentioned later, it just measures the temp of the system as a whole and not the mobo solely. Some mobo manufacturers call this the mobo temp and others call it the system temp and others call it the case temp, whatever, after all, they are both getting the temp of the whole medium inside the case itself :)

I said that there is nothing called mobo temp just because the mobo itself has different parts with different temp. For example, the temp of the CPU zone is different from the temp of the RAM which is different from the temp of the slots and so on. They differ slightly, yes, but the mobo has mutiple temperatures if we look at it precisely. If we are trying to get an approximation, then we can say fine, the whole average mobo temperature is 40C for example or whatever. We are just different in naming, that's it :)

I don't know where is exactly the thermistor that measures the temp of the CPU, but for it to be accurate, it should be very close physically to it, and for the mobo temp or system temp (Whatever) to be correct, the thermistor should be as far from the CPU as possible.

My Intel board has three temp sensors and three controled fans. The fan speeds up when temp is high. one is called processor temp, the others just system 1 & 2. The system temp controles the back and front fans. I have seen temperatures go up as high as 70C in the processor and 55 in the systems. There is a software monitor that sjows these as well as voltages etc.
 
That's exactly what I meant, every mobo manufacturer has it's own standards in this issue, and they give names as they like and measure whatever temperatures they wish, that's it.

Actually intel has clearly defined what zone1 and zone2 are. As for AMD, if im not mistaken the mobo/system temeperature thingy is in the top right or bottom right corner of the board
