Hi new to the site and also thhe computer building scene,
i know how to assemble a computer but one of the things that i cant get my head around is the motherboard, what do i need to look for in an mothboard, what are the most important things to look for is there a quick way to determine which motherboard would suit, i prefer gigabyte with the amd athlon 64 dont know what type yet just need to know what i need to look for in a motherboard, the book i have for building them talks about sockets, chipsets and buses is this important? Also can i build a computer for under £500 because im only 15.

Thanks.

sockets are what the cpu will fit into to work on the motherboard. the mobo and the cpu have to have the same socket type.

the chipset comes installed on the mobo and works hand in hand with the cpu.

the buses are connections directly to the mobo, built directly on the mobo to connect things such as sound cards, video cards, extra usb ports. there are different kinds of buses, for example, pci, pci express, and agp. when buying a vid card for the computer, the vid card will tell you if it is agp, pci, and so on. make sure your motherboard has the corresponding slot(bus) to plug it into.

here is a list of mother boards by gigabyte priced from 47 to 160 USD. all are amd compatible. this should get you started. enjoy! :D

Thanks for the reply, but say if i was at a computer fair/market and i was surrouded by people pushing and shoving and i have to look for which motherboard i want instead of standing there for like 10 minutes reading every single bit, what could i look for stright away to tell me if the motherboard was good and for my standard of computer, in other words what are the most important things to look for, so i could lift one up of the table quick look at the crutial things i need to know then i know it would do the job.

Sorry if it sounds complicated.

thanks.

should have an agp or pci express slot(s). approx. 4 pci slots. correct socket for processor. serial ata connection for hdd. 3 or 4 slots for memory(4 if dual channel) 2 ata channel connections(what ur cd and dvd rom will plug into :)) this is what i would look for ....you know....at a convention and at a glance. :)

answer to first question, no. but whatever mobo you buy will determine which processor you can buy.

second question, no, the ata refers to the ide cables, the wide ones that your cd rom and/or dvd rom will plug into the motherboard through.

If i am after an AMD athlon 64 processor which socket would you advise would a socket 939 be better than the 754.

Thanks.

does this matter if you have not got the processor yet?
not as much but you should prolly buy a motherboard that works with a CPU you'll be buying...

do you mean SATA or what is said above?
he means (or should at least) to ata connectors alternatively known as 2 PATA conenctors or 2 IDE connectors

if i am after an AMD Athlon 64 processor which socket would you advise would a socket 939 be better than the 754.
CPU 101 (yes 939 is a superior platform).
