Motion sensor case mod

I just saw this thread,

http://www.computerforum.com/86102-coolest-case-mod-ever.html

This has inspired me, imagine those doors opening whenever your hand got close to them. Just like in FPS's whenever you get close to a door, they slide open for you. So how could I go about doing this. i don't know what kind of motion sensor it would need. Something like a automatic door, where it will stay open when something is in front of it, and close when something is not in front of it. I just think this would be a really cool mod for all sorts of things, usb drive doors, dvd drives, things like that. The main thing is a fast opening speed, and no lag between when it senses your hand, and when it opens. It would kind of suck to have your hand sitting there, while the thing takes a second or two to open. It needs to open as your hand is coming towards it. I dont know, what do you guys think, feasible or not?

i posted that thread :D
i think its feasable, but i know it would require quite alot of advanced electronics knowledge to pull it off, the main thing is where to buy the sensors, theyre pretyy expensive. i think it might be easier to do it with a remote like the doom 3 mod?

It wouldnt be that hard, use the same linear actuator as he used in that mod, just hook the switching segment of the circuit up to a PIR sensor, although depending on how the actuator is powered you might need to use a relay to switch it on and off, in which case you would also need a supply voltage going to the PIR, but it is certainly do-able (is that a word)
