Mouse and USB problem. Help PLZ!!!

Ok so on my older desktop (PC100), which my sister uses, I have a USB interface card that also has the PS/2 connector.

Now the mouse and USB have stopped working. It was working last night, now nothing. I checked the bios and everything is enabled but in windows its not picking up.

I have no clue what else to do, in terms of troubleshooting. Any suggestions PLZ?

The adapter could have easily quit there or needs to be removed and reinstalled in the device manager and drivers reinstalled if any. With those removed and finding, right clicking on, and uninstalling in the device manager that allows Windows to perform a fresh detection upon a restart of the system itself. If the card is still good Windows will prompt with the new hardware found message looking for drivers.

Well thanks for your post. I just happen to reformat and the copy of windows was damaged. Anyways its working now; however, the mouse does need replacing cause it doesn't really move that great horizontally. Vertical it moves like a champ.

A full install will do it for sure. Many would simply try the repair install method first however as the time saver. What type of mouse are you using there? Optical mice smply need a basic cleaning once those get a little gummed up. For the trackball type any soft non linting cloth will take care of the finger marks fast.

Honestly, I've never been able to do a repair of windows before. So I just choose to reformat. Its an optical mouse thats beeing used. There was a Microsoft one being used and that doesn't work anymore. Now were using a IBM one which either needs replacing or like you said a good cleaning.

If that's an optical model not a rubber ball the lens may simply need cleaning with a soft cloth. With the Trackball Explorer seen in the image here the optical ball pops out where you then wipe that off as well in the socket it snaps down in. All of a sudden it moves like a feather.

The older rubber type had to see the replacement ball go in when work if any replacements were available. With those the plastic gearing for horizontal may have went on you. Generally the MS optical mice are pretty durable while Logitech also sees a good lineup.

Its a optical mouse with a rubber ball. I had changed the mouse from the IBM one to a Microsoft one. Had the Microsoft for about 1 month now and now it doesn't work. The IBM one that I have works but like I said, not proper. I have a Logitech USB mouse that has the lens but for some reason it doesn't get any power from the USB port on any computer, only on my laptop it work for some reason.

The only optical mice with a ball would be the trackball type made of the reflective plastic. One with a rubber ball will see gearing on the inside of the shell for the contacts there. The other types of optical mice detect movement through a small hole on the bottom of the mouse as you move it across a pad.

The lazer in the MS model was probably bad from the start if it didn't simply quit or get clogged up inside for some reason. The newer mice like the MS model come with a PS/2 adapter like the Logitech model should see as well. That's for plugging the mouse directly into the port on the main board itself rather then an addon card. That would be the first thought on that.

Well I got another problem with this right now.

Now I have my USB ports and my couse port on the same interface card.

There are two problems now that I was hoping someone could help me resolve.

Problem 1) New mouse does not work, at all. Have tried 3. Two of them being PS/2 mouse and I USB. USB mouse does not get any power. PS/2 mice, one does nothing at all and the other one you can only right click. If I connect the old mouse it works its crappy way.

Problem 2) Mostly when the new mice are connected, the USB modem conflicts for some reason and its stops working. When you remove the mouse the modem works. USB printer does work with the mouse plugged in.

Now I've checked the BIOS and the mouse is enabled. OS is Windows XP. I reformated 3 times last night, trying XP PRO. Win 2K and then XP again. Still nothing.

So I'm way out of idea's on what to do. Any input would be appreciated.

You reformatted the drive due to a hardware not OS problem there. The card you are presently using sounds like the source of everything rather then plugging a PS/2 model directly into the board. When plugging the mouse into the usb port the card is then pulling down the entire usb bus causing the problems with the printer.

Yes, I did reformated due to the hardware conflict. Thinking that maybe just maybe the windows is damaged or for some reason didn't install proper.

I guess the card is really main source of the problem. What doesn't make head or tails is when I plug in the old worn out mouse it works, but the news don't.

The only other thing I can really try is either a USB hub, or one of those ps/2 to USB adaptors since the USB ports work.

The MS model used here comes with a PS/2 adapter while still being a usb type mouse. What bugs me more is the usb to standard MS model keyboard where you have to unplug during the installation process for XP but not Vista since the PS/2 101 or 104 standard is needed simply to press F8 at the license agreement. That was one major goof originally seen there while usb and cordless models are now the most common seen in use by the home user.

Once you mentioned seeing problems with the printer as well as the mice that pointed right at the expansion card you have there. With 3 mice in a row seeing problems along with the printer something is pulling the entire usb bus down. Nake sure you don't load up a hud too much either since the usb bus tiself only sees a small current going through it to start with.

The printer works when its plugged in even if the mouse if plugged in. Its the USB Cable modem that doesn't work when plugged in with the mouse.

Printer, modem, etc. won't matter since you are still seeing the bus pulled down likely from a resource conflict between devices there. For a mouse go for the PS/2 adapter to free up a port for the modem you use there. That will lighten the load on the card as well as the bus itself.

Well I actually got the mouse working. I went into the BIOS and practically re-did the whole BIOS and got the serial mouse to work.

One thing to consider on an older system like that besides a need to see the latest or last bios update go on would be seeing if the 3v lithium type battery on the board is too weak. A weak battery will see the loss of cmos information being stored.

If you are only seeing the problem with a printer that's been on for some time it wouldn't be from the printer requiring a higher current value then often seen on older systems. This is one type of problem being realized with newer types of usb devices like external drives. The mouse works now anyways.
