Mouse problem

My mouse has been working fine on my computer for ages, but yesterday I was just surfing the net when it suddenly went weird. The mouse buttons have sort of switched...but not quite. Basically, if I click on my desktop with my left mouse button, that menu with arrange icons, properties etc on it pops up, just like it would do if a normal mouse clicked it with its right mouse button. The left mouse button doesn't do all the things a normal right mouse button would do though, so it's not like my buttons have just simply switched places or anything - it can't copy and paste for example. Also, my right mouse button does nothing whatsoever. HELP.
 
Have you looked on Mouse properties on My computer and Control panel?

Have a look to see if the default settings have changed,If the have change them to what you want.
 
Is that a programmable model wih software or a basic corded model? If it a basic corded model your mouse.sys file may have been corrupted somehow. With the XP installation disk in the cd drive close out the auto loaded installed and proceed to the Run prompt off of the Start menu. Type in "sfc /scannow" there and press either the enter key or the ok button if that will work. This will start up the system file checker utility that repairs and replaces any system files found damaged or missing.

You may have been hit with a spyware or trojan even a virus that is now revealing itself. This would be one other thing to look into if the sfc doesn't correct the problem. The last item to consider of course is the display drivers are in need of removal and updating. If it's not Windows related your display drivers could have been corrupted somehow.

Have you gone into the desktop properties>settings>advanced>monitor to see what the refresh rate is set for there? With the video drivers removed you are now seeing the Windows default refresh rate. Apparently the system file checker found something else and repaired that. Now you will simply need to install the correct drivers. The sfc /scannow does correct many things at times. Your description of alternating buttons does sound more like a bug in the works.
