Moving a Dard Drive

Ok so i want to upgrade my mobo and processor. If i get a new mobo and new processor and connect my current hdd to it will win and all my other programs still work?
 
probably not, you will need to reinstall windows. unless the motherboard is VERY similar but then that wouldn't be much of an upgrade would it. The cpu would be ok it is just the mobo that it causes that to not work.

why is that is anything storred on the mobo?

Yup. The motherboard will be different and your current installation of Windows would not be able to boot with the new one. It would just blue screen and boot loop on you.
 
Its a driver conflict like said above. If you uninstall all your boards drivers before you swap out, you will have a better chance of it booting. If it doesn't you can always run a repair install. Plus you will need to reactivate it either way. The best bet is to do a fresh install.
 
That's interesting. I've swapped a few hard drives, and never had that problem. Windows always booted right up. I never uninstalled the drivers. Except when switching 64 bit XP to a non 64 bit processor. Just try it.
 
If you do the upgrade and you have an OEM version of Windows on your current system, you will also have to get a new copy of Windows, as your current key will be bound to your motherboard, so changing that will mean having to change your board also

In that case you would still almost certainly need to format due to driver conflicts like mentioned before, but you should be good with your current version of Windows, as retail can be used on as many computers as you want, provided it is only installed on 1 at a time (or however many your liscence permits)

Are you sure about that? I have upgraded my processor and mobo on my gaming computer with no hard drive confictes what so ever. I have done this a few times with the same hard drive. Never once did I have a problem booting Windows.

Not saying it wont work. Alot of times windows will blue screen on boot because of motherboard driver conflicts. Less of a chance if you uninstall the old boards drivers. Why not uninstall the old board drivers if it improves the chance. Unless you have come kind of special relationship with them.

The only experience Iv'e had is when I used the old hdd (xp) drivers and all, on a new system till I upgraded the os. It booted np, but gave me 3 days to activate. After 3 days I had to try it since xp quit and still no upgrade purchased. I was surprised the oem key passed.
