moving files from 1 hd to another

I am just about to install a second hard drive and wondered if anyone can recomend the best way to do things. I have a 6gb hd at the moment and intend in installing a 80gb and make one of them a slave.

What I really need to know is which one should be master and which one the slave. My original idea was to have the 6gb as the master and keep just the operating system on it which I'd hope would make my computer boot up a little quicker as it's very slow at the moment. I would therefore have to move over all my other applications and files etc to the new hard drive. What would be the best and easiest way to do that?

Any suggestions would be most welcome.

Well....if they are both IDE's I would install windows on the 6gb and set it as the master and the 80gb as the slave for storage and if something goes wrong with windows it's not a problem to reformat...in other words, i think you had a good idea. that's my setup currently...i can't complain but it wasn't my original intent...but now i don't think it was such a bad idea.

btw...it may not be bad to do what praetor suggested using the 80 for everything and the 6gb as a scratch because of the fact the 80gb is probably faster...you might want to look into that. i would just put your windows drive as the master...as far as transferring the files....easy...burn them to a CD. I'm not sure how windows would handle having the OS on one hard drive and it trying to run from another...so yeah...just burn to a CD or somethin'...here's something fun though. hriders.com has email accounts that are a terabyte with 500mb email attachments....it's free so you could toss your 6gb on there no problem. :P

i dont think you can transfer exectuable programs via cd, as well as a windows. i havnt actually tried this before, but i dont think it will work. try looking for a program that will copy a partition to a different hd. Im not quite sure how that would work nor have i heard of it, but its worth a shot. and as far as the slow start up goes, switching your hard drive may not drastically increase the speed of the start up, because it may be your amt of ram, proccessor, etc etc. However, if it was faster when you bought it, everything I just said after "and as far" can be disregarded and be thrown in the virtual trashcan

Optiplex why do you keep asking to transfer files USE NORTON GHOST i think this is the 3rd thread I've seen when you ask this to people.
