Moving Hard Drives

Hey,

I just ordered a computer set up off new egg, and im just making sure that i can take out the harddrive from this computer and put it in my new one, and i wouldn't have to install XP or any of my programs again.

So it would work right?

thanks.

You might need to reinstall Windows. A new CPU and motherboard sometimes requires you to start fresh. Otherwise, there might be conflicts. I've heard of some people not having this problem, but generally, it's a good idea to reinstall Windows.

On things for sure, you will have to have install the new device drivers .. and you might have to delete the old ones.

You should have no problem running your computer with the old hard drive, although you might have to set up new drivers. And make sure that your new computer is compatable with your old hard drive (If its a windows 2k/xp it should). If the hard drive that you want to put into the enw computer is under 40GB, i would recommend getting a 2nd larger drive in addition.

shouldn't be a problem, but as others have mentioned, you will need to install drivers for at least some of the new devices. windows should autodetect and ask for them though.

As long as its not the boot drive. If it is, you might be able to get away with it but dont count on it (and its not reccomended). Do realize that contrary to the general consensus of replies, it is highly reccomended that you reinstall and that if it works without reinstallation -- that's simply fluke. Critical component changes damn near always require reinstallations
