it loads up but it says this message 'the connection was refused when attempting to contact the proxy server you have configured please check your proxy settings and try again? why shouldnt it work it works on internet explorer but not firefox

why shouldn't what work on ie and not firefox?

are you talking about the browser itself? or a certain webpage?
 
do you have a firewall set up? if so, make sure u grant firefox permission to access the internet. if you dont, make sure xp's built in firewall allows firefox(if u have xp)

Did you try what it told you to do??

Tools->Options->Press connection settings...... select direct connection to the internet
 
Yeah, I had that problem a while back and I thought that I would never be able to use Firefox again. How naive I was

. I went into Norton Firewall (I don't know what firewall you are using) , Personal Firewall, Programs (tab), and then in the list of programs, I located Firewall and set it to permit all. I don't know if this help, but there goes.
