MS 2010 Word problems -opening files

Problem: Word document files (and Office) will not open when I click them on - it tries but nothing happens.

Just started about a week ago doing this. I can partially get into them using word pad.

Thanks for any help in this matter
 
When I click on a Word document file , the (Windows 7) animated opening symbol comes on for about 6 seconds , then is gone and the file does not open.
 
Right click the file, choose Open With, and make sure Word is selected and the "Always open file type" box is checked.
 
When I right click the file and use "open with" I get - MS Office Client Virtualization (default) and Note Pad and Word Pad. There are no check boxes (Windows 7). It will open with Word Pad but with loss of some functions which I may have to live with. I tried to use the Restore (to an earlier date) function but it failed.

Open with>Choose Default Program

Then do the steps I listed above.
