msconfig question

I've been using msconfig on my dads laptop which is pretty old and only has 512mb of ram to try and get it to start up and run a bit quicker. I cancelled a few items in start up and then i realised that it has to stay in selective start up to work every time it starts up. Is there any disadvantage to staying in a selective start up permanently? Is it harder on the computer in any other ways?
