MSConfig

Hello all,

Well I have been browsing around MSConfig, checking out what's loading with my computer startup and what not, then I came across this:

untitledui8.jpg

Anyone know what this might be? And why it's blank in both 'startup Item' and 'Command'?

Secondly, Within the services tabs there are the following checked that I have identified:

  1. Netmeeting Remote Desktop Sharing - But I don't use remote desktop/remote desktop sharing
  2. Smart Card - Not entirely sure on what this is for
  3. Print Spooler - I don't have a printer
  4. Windows Media Connect Service - What exactly does Windows Media consist of?
  5. Windows Media Serial Number Service - What exactly does Windows Media consist of?
  6. Automatic Updates - I don't use automatic updates, I update myself manually which is what I prefer and I have automatic updates off

So is it safe to uncheck these?

As far as your blank entry goes. It's usually nothing. It could be by a program that was installed or uninstalled improperly and it wasn't complete; this makes that install or uninstall unable to update that key and therefore it's empty. If you really want to remove it, you can probably remove it by editing your registry, but since it's practically not anything.. the hassle of trying to fix it is probably more than just leaving it alone. The other thing it could be is a malicious app that modified the key. If you have a good anti-tool, it's usually not this.

As far as the services.. you could leave them alone. They are MS services and they usually dont run unless something triggers it.. So it's not taking much or doing much. Your updates, that's up to you.. you can turn it off since u don't use it.

Ok, thank you for the response :). I'll take your advice and leave everything well alone apart from the automatic updates.

when you run in safe mode, startup programs such as those do not start up.

isn't that pleasant? you wouldn't believe how long my list of startup items i have. most are unchecked, tho.

i'll just throw this out there.. what i have checked is.......
atiptaxx (my cool graphics driver for ati video cards on hp's)
zlclient (zone alarm)
jusched (java runtime envirnment (jre) 1.5.0)
avgcc (AVG Free anti-virus)
citrusac (my frickin alarm clock!)
run google web accelerater (speaks for itself, always useful)

AND THINGS I HATE RUNNING ON STARTUP!! :) ~~~
