Mucked up IP and LAN

I’ve recently been attempting to use proxies as a means of surfing. Problem is I’ve now discovered a whole nest of problems. My computer is connected to the net via a router, and when I search out my IP address through the net it gives me completely different reading from when I search through “ipconfig”. Even when I go through a search engine, the title of the site displays one IP and the actual site tells me another. It’s the same with the other computers on my network. Plus, if I try to plug the internet straight into one of the computers on the network without the router, it won’t connect at all. I would normally understand this as just a mix up with IP’s and things but it’s only been happening recently.:confused:

I’m a real amateur with networking:o so any help will be appreciated

I almost avoided this threas because there are so many errors, or miss understandings... Unless you were simply unable to get your point across...

Im going to explain a few things first.

If you plug in to a router you will have 2 ip's which the computer can be identified by. The local IP is an address which the router assign (usually something lie 192.169.1.1) All computers on that router will have an address like that. This is the LOCAL IP. The PUBLIC ip is basically what is assigned to your modem. The public ip is given from the ISP and can be tracked. The number can change daily or monthly depending on the company.

Now about proxies...
There are a couple type of proxies which you can use. You can specify the address in the itools menu, internet options and connections tab(lan settings). You also can use a proxy liek CGIProxy which is like an HTTP tunneling software which masks your IP by routing through someone elses computer.

Your ipconfig will show your LOCAL ip, your web version showing your IP will show your proxy ip (if on) or your PUBLIC ip if the proxy is off.

Cheers that explains a hell of alot:) . Just a few questions. Is there any way of changing my PUBLIC ip without using a proxy(just wandering). And could there be ANY reason for the net failing when i take the router out of the equation??:D

Sorry, that's all I knew on the subject. From reading his explanation, I was under the impression he had the two confused, which could really screw someone up.
