hey everyone,
i've got an old celeron 533 gathering dust, and was wondering if i could turn it into a server? (i'm bored...)

i think its got 320Mb ram, 8Gb hard drive, and a 100mbps network card.

how would i go about making it a server? do i need a particular operating system?

if it helps, the current hardware in the house is this:
sattelite broadband modem, printer, and 3 computers (2 XP, and 1 vista) connected to an 8port switch.

SME Server seems to have some pretty modest requirements: http://www.smesmith.de/doku/6.01/chpt-04.0.html

Now, I have never used this myself, but I have a friend who runs a small server at home and he swears by it. Very easy to setup and configure.

looks like i can run a category 2 SME server...
how do i go about obtaining it? is it a free download?

edit:
i found www.smeserver.org, where i can download the software.
which version do you reckon i should get, keeping in mind i can only run a category 2 server?

and thanks heaps for your response, its just what i'm looking for! (except i've never used linux before :S)
