Multiple access to the same file simultaneously?

My friend has a NAS hooked up to the router, filled with video files.

Let's say on his network, there are the NAS, him, and me. He is playing a certain video file on his PC from the NAS. While he is doing this, can I also play the exact same video file on my PC? Will there be some "this file is already in use" message?

Yes. The only situation where you shouldn't be able of doing this is when someone opens the file for editing - however, for playing the media, no good player would do that.

In a computer-repair class I took, my instructor said that only one user can access a file on a network at a time and that files on a network have no concurrent access (no multiple access at the same time).

Thanks for clearing this up.
