Multiple Monitors - Please Help!

I think this belongs here. I am running Vista on a Dell XPS. I have two Nvidia GeForce 9800 GT cards with two monitors operating on both. I also have 2 EVGA UV Plus external usb video cards. My problem is when I bring up the display I have monitors 7 & 8 greyed out. Since when my computer boots up my monitors are not staying in the places I want them to, and and I'm hoping removing 7 & 8 will fix this problem. Any help would be appreciated whether it's removing the monitors or just making the displays stay where I leave them. Thanks

I'm a little confused, your description makes it sound as if you have 8 monitors, but only mentioned devices for 6 (4 x 9800GT, 2 x USB).

Are the greyed out monitors the ones running off of the EVGA UV Plus? I would think those would be the source of the problem if anything. The easiest way to find out would be to remove the problem monitors and see how it works, it would be a lot faster than anyone here just guessing as to what might be the answer.

Hi, yes I only have 6 monitors but there are an extra 2 showing up in my Display settings. They are not being used and I have no idea how to remove them.

Ok, I thought you meant that you had two monitors that were actually displaying just a grey screen. I understand now that you're talking about the settings menu. The greyed out screens in the menu represent potential screens that you're not using. I assume that your 9800GTs have a third output on them, likely something like S-Video, and that is what these represent. I don't think there is an easy way to make them go away, but I really don't think that they are the source of your problem.

Try running four screens without the USB video cards, and see if they stay in the right place. My guess is that they're related to the issue.

I tried it with the external cards unplugged and it just makes the 4 monitors greyed out. Through the Nvida settings via control panel the 4 monitors through the video cards are in the proper place, it seems only in display settings are they messed up. You might be right that the extra ones are the s-video.

I didn't mean removing them would fix the greyed out problem, because that really isn't a problem. They are just part of this particular settings menu and are supposed to be there. Them going out of order is probably a bug with using two of those USB cards together.

You're right, there is. I uninstalled the drivers again. Since there are two different external cards I only reinstalled the newest one rather than both to see if it would work since I went oldest to newest last time. The new one worked for both so that got rid of the 7 and 8. Now they still are not booting up where they are supposed to be, which is frustrating but easier to put in place now the extra ones are removed. I'm not sure there is any way to fix them to boot up where I want them.

Actually the external ones are just not starting on boot up...I have to start them manually...getting frustrated.
