I used to keep my operating system and files on one disk and all my music and movies and stuff on a larger disk, I have just upgraded to windows vista, on the smaller disk and just attached the bigger disk. Windows says that I must reformat the disk before I can use it. What can I do to use the data on the disk? I dont want to have to start the collection all over and spend hours ripping CDs. Thanks luke.

well you can try putting that drive in another system to see if it reads it, it still doesn't read it, then I suggest you use a recovery program. I would believe that the data would still be on the hard drive, your index might be abit stuffed, so if you use a recovery program you can just copy the information out of that drive and then format it to start afresh.

I have idea which recovery program to use. Any suggesstionions? Why would this happen anyhow? Does XP and Vista use different file systems and thus not compatible? My system just says tht the drive needs formatting, doesnt tell me the size of the disk or any other information.x
