what software can i use to cut out certain parts of a tune (mp3 format), like long quiet build-ups on the intro, so I can use them for ringtones?

i have heard of cubase and fruity loops etc, but is there anything for free?

Nero sountrack can help you with this, but it's not free

I prefer do it the other way
what i do is convert the mp3 to .wav. then i right click the file and select 'record' .now i can edit or add other music to the one im editing. windows can do this...try it you'll see
