Hey everyone, I'm going be getting a new laptop very shortly and one of the things that this laptop is going have on it is alot of music from me d.l it. Now I don't want to use up so much memory off my laptop from the music so I was wondering can a external harddrive be able to hold music files so I don't affect my laptop?

Yup it can do that no problem... you could also get a large capacity mp3 player for the job, it wouldn't cost any more than an external HD and it could play the music.

Alright cool thanks guys!

Irishwhistle I wanted to use a external hard drive because I will be using this for my ipod, the songs I d.l off of the server I use then put it on Itunes. I know with all the songs I have it takes up some space and thats why I wanted the external hard drive.

Also how would I be able to save it on the external and not on my laptop? And how would I get to the music?

I use my external hard drive for my music :D

In itunes, you add the folder of where the songs are and then make sure you external hard drive is in, and then you will be fine.

Alright sweet! hopefully I'll have my laptop soon and then I'll get the external hard drive and be ready! You recommend any external hard drives?

I recommend, buy a external hard drive case, and a laptop hard drive, and build it yourself, it is really easy, mine is :D

Why would you recommend a laptop hard drive?

If you want to put one together yourself, get an enclosure that supports 3.5" drives and has good cooling. You can get these enclosures with IDE, SATA and Firewire interfaces.

They are small and easy, no need for external power, either.

They don't hold enough storage and many of the laptop drives are slower than your standard 3.5" drive. For media storage, I'd go with at least 500GB, which is unavailable with 2.5" models.

mep916 What brand and enclosure would you recommend? Or show me?

According to MaxPC, this is the best they've ever tested: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produ...3r-_-External+Enclosure-_-ICY+DOCK-_-17198015

I've never assembled my own external drive, but I think common sense would suggest that a 3.5" with larger storage capacity - not to mention faster speeds - would be better, unless you really need something highly compact and portable. In that case, you may want to take a look at a 2.5" laptop drive paired with an ultra-thin enclosure.
