Must be a Virus

Two of my friends showed me their computers with the same problem. They are both Dells running Vista Home Premium, but I don't think that is relevant.

When the computers boot up they just go to a black screen with the My Documents folder open but not displaying the start menu, side bar or desktop. I can still hit Ctrl+Alt+Del and start the task manager, then run explorer as a new task and it finishes booting just fine. After that, everything runs without a problem; so it doesn't seem to be life-threatening.

Still, my friends would like to be able to use their computer without having to go through that process every time they boot. Any thoughts? If you don't know, could you recommend another forum where I might find some suggestions?

I ran a virus scan on one and cleaned up some stuff, but that didn't improve the situation. The second friend had one of those Vista security warnings preventing a file wmisftc.exe from running. I googled that, but didn't turn up any results, so I have no idea what that file might be. Otherwise, everything looks normal.

Thanks,

- Greg

Have them run Malwarebytes and Hijackthis and posts logs here.

Please download Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware from here, here, here or here and save it to your desktop.
  • Double-click mbam-setup.exe and follow the prompts to install the program.
  • At the end, be sure a checkmark is placed next to
    • Update Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware
    • and Launch Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware
  • then click Finish.
  • If an update is found, it will download and install the latest version.
  • Once the program has loaded, select Perform quick scan, then click Scan.
  • When the scan is complete, click OK, then Show Results to view the results.
  • Be sure that everything is checked, and click Remove Selected.
  • A log will be saved automatically which you can access by clicking on the Logs tab within Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware

If you continue to experience problems after doing this, please post a HijackThis log by doing the following:

Download the HijackThis installer from here.
Run the installer and choose Install, indicating that you accept the licence agreement. The installer will place a shortcut on your desktop and launch HijackThis.

Click Do a system scan and save a logfile

Most of what HijackThis lists will be harmless or even essential, don't fix anything yet.

Post the logfile that HijackThis produces along with the Malwarebytes Anti-Malware log

Thanks for the offer to help. I actually had run Malwarebytes previously to no avail on one computer. Haven't used Hijackthis since Trend picked it up, but I'll get on one of the computers sometime this week and post a log for you. Thanks again,

- Greg

Try to create a new account in the system and logon to it.
And see if its still doing the same.
If its still doing the same, then try to run Adware (can download from here: http://www.lavasoft.com/single/trialpay.php
and download Spybot from here: http://www.safer-networking.org/en/mirrors/index.html
Update them and run them.
looks like their registry was hacked by some stuff
Hope that helps

on Vista and 7 it made me manually start explorer.exe and this helped :)
Start > Run , type in 'regedit' (without the quotes of course) in the search box .

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\Winlogon.

In Winlogon, on the right side, there should be a value called "Shell".
Double click this value. Make sure only 'Explorer.exe' is the value of Shell, if anything else is there , simply delete it and leave 'Explorer.exe' . Close out the window and restart....

See if that works..

It must say Explorer.exe

Rerun hijackthis and place a check next to these entries.

R3 - URLSearchHook: (no name) - *{CFBFAE00-17A6-11D0-99CB-00C04FD64497} - (no file)

O4 - HKCU\..\Run: [WMPNSCFG] C:\Program Files (x86)\Windows Media Player\WMPNSCFG.exe

Then click on fix checked at the bottom.

I also noticed that you have Mcafee listed in the log. It's okay as long as you don't have their full antivirus program installed. But you already have AVG antivirus running and its not good to have 2 antivirus programs running at the same time.

johnb35:

Ran that this morning and it didn't correct the issue. Any other items there that should be removed?

- Greg

You might want to try doing a repair install of the operating system. It doesn't seem like it malware related.

Vista i have heard has given so many issues on peoples PC's could be another Vista issue who knows !! did you even run spybot?

uhh it's like you skipped over my post ! lol had exact same problem
