i am running 512mb of mwave brand memory on my amd 64 3000+, asus k8n, system. the memory runs at 2.5 cas and seems to be ok. my question is, i want to get up to a gig of memory and would you recommend just getting another stick of 512 mb (because i have 2x256 right now) of mwave memory, or should i get a different make of memory, or switch competely?

hmm

What exact Athlon 64 3000+ do you have (Winchester, Venice)? That could determine its ability to run in dual channel properly should you add two 256 sticks. If you add another 512 to the 2x256 you have now, you will find that the memory will not be running in dual mode anymore. As to the RAM company, it would be best getting ram from of the same type/series/make. However, I have mixed RAMs in the past without any problems. As long as they have same characteristics and capabilities, you should be fine.

i have a newcastle core, and i only have 3 memory slots on my motherboard, so i only have one free one left. what would you recommend?

I see..

In that case, I would recommend you to get the 512MB extra RAM from the same company if you can grab hold of it. However, the most important are equal timings and latencies on default. That should eliminate any possible compatibility issues.

P.S.: You have the 754 socket type right?

ya, i have socket 754. but since it wont run in dual mode if i got a third memory chip, would it be running slower? or how does that effect it?

Nah

You should be fine. On socket 939, there have been problems with older A 64s in terms of filling all four slots. The speed had to be dropped below DDR 400 speeds. However, in your case, you should be just fine and the RAM will run at the max speed.
