MXM compatability

I just wanted to clear something up, can a laptop with MXM use any MXM graphics card? By that I mean could the very first MXM laptop use the the very latest MXM GPU? Sorry, but I couldn't find the info :confused:

It is a hot or miss proceedure. The current generation is MXM 3.0 (PCIe 2.0 x16), but I think that MXM 4.0 will roll out with GTX600 and HD7000 on laptops. I am not sure about the backwards compatibility, but unlike a desktop, you need BIOS support for a MXM card. I don't think that MXM 1 would be compatible with 2 and 2 with 3 and so on.

This said, there have been a couple of people on the forum here that have upgraded their MXM 3 GPUs within the same MXM generation. That seems to work well, but I do not think I have ever seen someone do it with a 3 GPU on a MXM 1 motherboard. It would be pointless as the CPU on a MXM 1 board would be a massively limiting factor.
