My Asus RT-N56U Router is starting to lose it.

I’ve been having a lot of trouble lately with my cable internet connection and I just noticed that my home network is also having problems. I’m not sure if it is the router itself or something interfering with it.

How can I tell?

My N56U's didn't last more than two years. They tend to run pretty hot, which is what I believe causes the wireless to crap out.

Wow, thanks but that's not so good news. I liked mine so much that I bought my sister one last Sept. when her netgear went out.

Well I guess I'll have to start looking for another wireless router. I have about 18 devices hooked up to this router as it is but not all at once.

The first option would be to update the firmware and see if that helps. A lot of updates for that router, I had one as well. Now have the AC66U.

What kind of budget are you looking at?

If you're network savvy at all there's some reasonable 'prosumer' gear available at a reasonable cost.

I’m hoping to keep it under $150 and closer to a $100, but it depends. I really need a WiFi range extender for my current network so depending on the range and security will determine what I’ll pay.

My old employer sent me to a 2 day class on networking well over 10 years ago, but I haven’t kept up with it and have forgotten everything I learned. Technology has changed quite a bit since then so I might as well say I’m new. I have some basic knowledge or enough to get it up and running.

Well, if you are wanting a range extender then I can tell you that you made a mistake buying the 56u. To get decent wireless range, you'll need a router with external antenna's that are directional. The AC66u gives you 3 directional antenna's.

Right now, newegg and amazon is selling it for $115

.
If you go to the ac68u, you are above your budget slightly.

Thanks John, I just watched the video from ASUS on the AC68U and I was impressed. I have to give it some more thought, but I think I might just go with this one.
