My CD/DVD Drive is no longer working

The CD Drive in my laptop is no longer working; when I put a CD in it makes the right noises, but nothing further happens.

It is no longer listed in the device manager, and isn't available on My Computer. In addition to this, the f2 boot menu simply lists it as "disabled".

What could be the problem? I wondered if my computer had been subjected to a virus or something that has maybe wiped drivers etc... or the drive is just broken, in which case i'll have to buy a new one.

Can anybody offer advice on what the problem is likely to be, and suggest some things that i can do before biting the bullet and buying a new drive? Oh, I called a computer shop and they quoted me £240 for a new drive, including fitting it! I can get one for around £50 and fit it myself... i was shocked that they were willing to take that much money from a customer!

Thanks

How old is your laptop?Maybe the drive died.If you can find a cheap new one,and install it yourself you'll be ok.Don't be shocked from the price the computer shop told you, they are usually pretty expensive...

Is it in a removable bay? Some of the Dells and others have a small USB socket on the rear of the CD Drive so that you can have the Floppy drive in the bay but still use the CDROM via USB.
