i just bought a new computer and i installed a dell version of xp on to it... when i downloaded grisoft avg i guess it deleted some windows files... so the problem is now i have to reinstall windows but i have to have the key first... and i never had one but i got my hands on a copy of xp that i want to put on now... so

1 how do i delete the old os and put on the new one?
2 what would be the best spyware blocker for free?
3 if i delete an os to put another one on will it delete all of my programs?

1. You put the cdrom into your drive and reboot your machine. If the machine just reboots back into the old OS then you need to reboot again but this time at the very beginning of the sequence you'll need to hit "del" key OR another such as "F4" or similar. Once it boots from the CD you will be prompted to remove the old OS etc. Don't worry it is easy, just follow the instructions on screen.

2. Don't know. I use ad-aware and spy sweeper.

3. Yes you will loose them all. You need to first backup anything important to CD or make a partition on your HD and save them to that. As for programs that came with your computer, If they where from dell then they'd most likely be on the recovery disks. You will most likely not be able to restore them unless you use the recovery Cd's to restore your OS. This I'm not sure. Install windows XP and put in all recovery disks that you have and see.

its no big deal about the programs i just got it yesterday so the only thing i had on there was world of warcraft... i just didnt want to have to install it again cause it takes a life-time... but thanks for your help... oh also my comp isnt a dell its a custom build so will the process still be the same

Yes it will be the same. I assumed it where a dell because you mentioned installing a Dell version of XP on it.

Well my advise is. Reformat the computer you got. Then later install all the important things that the computer need. Like for example: Install the printer and the video card software and stuff. Then later update all your updates on your computer that includes the printer too. Then do not install all of the other kinds of junks. Here is what a computer needs:

1. go to google and search for advast. (virus protection)
2. go to google and look for adware. You will need that in the future. It deletes spyware stuff.
3. go to what ever your video card website is: Example mine is www.ati.com because I have an ati card.
4. Get services pack 2 for firewall. It comes with the updates.

These are my suggestion! You can look at other people if you want. But I like my way. What? It only takes 1 1/2 to reformat the computer depending on the size you have.

Haha. I didn't like those program that they download on the computer: So I go ahead and reformat my computer and get everything back. Oh yea make sure you have something to backup your stuff in your computer.
