My Computer doesn't recognize my cd-rom drive

My computer doesn't show my cd drive. Nor does my cd drive actually open. I have had this problem before, but it was because the cable wasn't in properly. However this time, the cables are in properly. Any ideas?

I unplugged the cable, and replugged it in, and then it started working. However, the problem occurred again. The cable might be faulty, but I did get it to work temporarily.

No, I don't think so. I've managed to get the drive to open from time to time. I just can't get anything to run from it and My Computer won't display the drive.

could be a dead drive then and it works sometimes and not others....... unless the motherboard isn't liking it.....

As cohen says, could be a motherboard issue? How old are the components (motherboard and CD drive). For just a CD drive, it must be quite old. Worth investing in a new one anyway. Only about $25 or £15.

I took a closer look at the cd drive, and it turns out that a few of the pins got bent up (not sure how). I'll have to replace it. Thanks for your help.
