So last night I was just browsing the internet and listening to music on my computer when it suddenly restarted. I let it boot again and after 30min. it restarts again. Oh Sh*t. Then this morning I fir it up with the intention of doing a system restore but the system restore fails. Try again(same restore point) Fails again. Microsoft prompts me to send some sort of system report and tells me to look at my software latest updates. There are alot, see my computer hasn't been connected to the internet in like 4 months so there is one of those damn windows updates. a driver update for my video card (Evga 7800gt)updates for firefox etc. I also recently installed a new hard drive(HITACHI Deskstar T7K500 HDT725032VLA360) and wireless adapter (LINKSYS WMP300N). Because of this and the nature of the problem I was thinking my power supply is broke(500 watt) or my CPU is overheating(but bios says its running at a steady 40c). Now when I turn my computer on it doesn't even get to windows before restarting but bios is fully functioning. Even in safe mode windows won't work. I've also been downloading alot of media to fill my new HD so, it could have been a virus or malicious program. My AVG virus protection is fully updated though. Now when I start my computer it restarts right before the desktop is supposed to appear. More relatent info:
MOTHERBOARD: (Sckt939)Gigabyte GA-K8N Ultra-SLI nForce4 Ultra SLI Chipset
CPU:(939-pin) AMD Athlon64 3500+
RAM: 1024 MB

sorry for the long post but I need to fix my computer. (I am also n00b so keep that in mind, Thanks)

You probably have a bad hard drive. Use your XP disk and boot into the Repair Console. From the prompt do a chkdsk /r. See what the results are. You may have to do a Fixmbr and/or a Fixboot as well.

sounds like a overheating problem if it works after leving it for a while. check that all the heatsinks (cpu, chipset and graphics) are attached propely and that the fans are all operational. you also could try cleaning the dust from the heatsinks aswell. check all connections to the motherboard and hdd. download a tempresure monitor.
