I leave my computer on all the time, I went to check it this morning when I got up and it was on but not working: the only indication I have is that the monitor appears to be off, and I cant use my keyboard to blindly restart XP or something else... so it seems its on but not working.
This has happened about 4-5 times in the last month. But usually I just need to restart my computer and everything is fine. Today it didn't restart. Basically when I turned it back on it seemed exactly like the on but not working thing. So restarting it made no progress.
What I know:
PSU seems fine bcuz my fans were running, my watercooling was running.
Also the MotherB seems somewhat fine bcuz my mouse would still light up and so would my keyboard.
I was unable to open my cd drives normally.
I was unable to use the restart button normally.
My watercooling system monitors my video card temp, it was nowhere near the temp that it should be at if the computer was actually on and working properly.
When I did restart it, it wouldn't even load the bios or anything. No start beep.
I tried restarting it numerous times with no success and the same symptoms.
So i could be the mortherB, otherwise I have no idea. It just seems like power is not getting to all the components off the MB. But that doesn't really coincide w/:
Check this out: eventually I decided to take a look @ the CPU. All I did was unsink it, it looked fine. I put on some new thermal grease, resink it, and voila my computer started. Now I prbly reapplied thermal grease about 8 weeks ago. Then I was putting my tower case back together and it crapped out right there. Same thing.
I decided to repeat the process, i just resunk the watercooling heatsink. And then it worked again. And now it is fine, for now. This does not make any sense. I litterally did nothing.
thoughts:
-could it be dust building up arond the CPU? I have 6 fans running including the PSU, the watercooler, & 3 remote, it generates more dust than I'd like but I try and clean it out on a regular basis.
-could a virus actually have done this? I mean not even load the bios?
It's unlikely the Watercooling is leaking.
Can a computer start w/out the CPU, like at least load the BIOS?
Thanks for the help!
