My computer or the mic?

Hi
I have purchased two new mics and heres what happened on each of them:

The first one worked for about 4 months then all of a sudden it stopped recording. no matter what troubleshooting i did I could not get it to work. So thats when I used the other one, thinking the mic was just broken.

So I plugged this one in and it worked for about 2 weeks. And now it stops recording. I have called HP (who suck by the way as far as customer service) and I have tried various forums and self-help websites, all to no avail.

My headphones work on this headset but the mic doesn't record. Would anyone be able to give me a couple more steps to try and isolate if it is the mics that are crapping out on me or if its the computer that doesn't accept my mic? Thank you.

tye other microphones(barrow ur friends microphones) to see if the line in works correctly. if it works correctly then buy a new microphone, a good mic. not just 5$, spend more and enjoy. if the line in doesnt works, then buy a USB microphone. you will find a lot on Ebay.

You could be getting some electonic feedback over the mic port that is destroying that part of the headset/mic, I would suggest switching over to a USB headset in general. Then, if the same thing happens, then we'll have to try something completely different...
