My computer tells me that programs which I DO have installed cannot be found.

WMP, for instance; if I double-click on a song, I get an error message saying, "Windows cannot find 'wmplayer.exe'. Make sure you typed the name correctly, and then try again. To search for a file, click the Start button, and then click Search."

The thing is, if I right-click on a song and go to 'open with', and then click WMP, it opens and plays with no problems, so the programs are on the computer and in full working order.

Cool Edit, CuBase, Adobe Premiere and all my games are having the same problem, but Creative MediaSource, Vegas and WMP Classic aren't.

What's up, and how do I fix it?

click on a song file to select it. right click whilst holding shift key, and press open with... choose program - then select the program, click always use this program to open it. next time you open it should be able to double click it.

I did that and it gives me the same "can't find it" message.

I don't understand why if I double-click, the program seems to not be there, but if I right-click, it works. Surely it's the same process, right?

no not really different/wrong links to the double click one whereas you select in right click.

when you get to the step wheere it says choose program - make sure you choose the right exe in the right directory where you install it. ie press browse and select it urself

Even if I go into Program Files and the WMP folder and double-click on the program itself, I get the "can't find it" message. It's weird.

I had the same problem but with every program and shortcut and file. All I could do was log on and off, I used the magical format tool that fixes all to fix it (lost a few critical files on that one).

happend to me once, nothing would open, just back-up and format, and i enthasise !!BACK-UP!! cos im sure we have all made that mistake.
