My Computer Won't Shut Off

Ever since I got an update from MSN regarding viruses my computer won't turn off with the start/shut down. I have to unplug it. My Norton is up to date and works fine and all other parts of my computer are fine, too. And there are no viruses or spys on my computer.

What commands or things do I have to do to get my computer to shut down as usual?

It sounds like a bad or impartial installation of the update happened there. You can go into control panel and try using the add/remove programs with the updates checked off to see it removed there. Another tool is the system restore process to revert the system to a point before the update went on. It does sound like the update's installer is hanging.

Besides using a restore point you could also remove MSN Messenger from the active startup group until this is corrected. The one thing that may have a caused a hangup is having Norton active when the update was going on. Antivirus and firewall programs can hamper things at times.

I found a way to shut it down by letting the screen saver come up, then hitting "shut down computer". I got a display which said I was on a network but if I want it would shut off anyway. I'm not on a network. It will shut down from that screen but not the one with the dashboard.

what programs are running when it does that? have you ran the virus scanner and Adaware? also, when you hit the power button (in the front of the pc, and just click it once) does the pc shut down normally?

It does this when I'm on anything or nothing. The power button on my computer never did shut it off, it only turns it on. Funny quirk of the eMachines maybe.

No, that's a power options setting for what you want the system to do when pressing the on/off switch. "when I press the power button on my computer" is the option to have the system shutdown, go into standby, do nothing, or "ask me what to do". You get there by right clicking on the desktop and first going to the screensaver tab.

The power options button is found at the bottom right which opens another screen. The first screen is where you choose how long or never to have the system and hard drive go into standby after so many minutes. The advanced tab is where you change the option for the power button. The other thing for having Windows control shutdown is the power settings in the system bios where you choose the "user defined" option there.
