I recently upgreaded from a pentium 4 1.8ghz to a 2.66 ghz. It is not overclocked and I'm not a gamer. just when surfing the internet or wotching youtube videos, when the cpu is at more than 60% for a few minutes it will get very hot and sometimes if it is on 100% few over 30 seconds it will turn of the computer. there is no where I can see the actual temp of the cpu. I was wondereing what I cando about this? I have already orded a new heatsink and fan that is sopposed do be better. Could this also be a problem with the cpu? thanks for your help

A couple of things...

Did you use the same heatsink from your old cpu on your new one?
If so, you can't do that without scraping off the old thermal paste and applying new thermal paste.

If not,
are you sure that your heatsink is properly attatched and bolted all the way down?

What he said.

Get yourself some 5$ Arctic Silver, take the CPU out and clean off the mount surface on both the chip and the heatsink. Then dab a little Arctic Silver on it, and make sure it is mounted firmly and properly.

New paste was applied, I dont think it has to do with the heatsink conection becouse the heatsink also gets very hot so it is absorbing the heat well.

But dissapating the heat is much more important than absorbing it. Definitely go for an aftermarket cooler.

Make sure when applying thermal past to only use a pea sized amount, otherwise it'll ooze into the socket and fry your board or your chip, it happened to a friend of mine. If you think about it there is very close to being no space between the heatsink and the cpu.

Do you have proper case ventilation? I have massive case air circulation and I never see above 40 Celsius under any circumstances.
