Ok, here is a pic of my CPU......its kinda strange.

I am looking in buying a new heatsink and fan for my CPU.....seems i get too much overheating (see my other post about my PC crashing in General computer chat) I was kinda wondering what i need, well, the size, will it matter at all? i have no clue in what i should do....can nayone pleeeease help!

First, you need to know the socket of you CPU. The heatsynks are based on the socket (which determines the size) And the once you know the socket type, then you just shop for a heatsynk in the Type socket. Once you get it, you will need thermal compound (it transfers the heat from the CPU to the heatsynk) A good one that does the job right is Arctic Silver-it is made up of 99.9% silver so you have to be careful to keep it away from certain parts of the CPU when applying (never just glob it on-EVER) or you can go with an even better (so I here) Zalman. Its a different kind of Compound you you will need to aply with a brush attached to the bottle.

I'm guessing you have socket 478 since you said you have an overheating prescott. But download everest or cpu-z and it'll probably tell you there.

As for the heatsink, there are plenty out there, try to pick one with the biggest fan size as it will probably be the quietest and move the most air. Other then that, just make sure the heatsink will physically fit in your computer as some may be VERY big.

You could always take the HSF off, take a pic, and post it here and a lot of people could tell you. It's either going to be 478 or LGA775(this is all assuming your talking about the PC in your sig). A lot of HSFs work for more than just one particular socket. So just search for a new HSF that works on sockets 478 and LGA775 and you should be fine. I'm not sure about this but I think CPU-Z tells you your socket...

Get a Copper Heatsynk, the dissipate heat better and faster. Or (you won't need to) if you have a lot of cash lying around you could get a gold which is the best metal to get rid of heat. (Or I could take that worthless green paper we all use to buy nice things with off you hands :D )

o, i have a very SMALL budget. (gotta buy braces, my driving lessons, cloths, and RAMs....lol silver of gold or not options!
ok, CPU-z told me i have a LGA 775 'package' i guess thatrs the socket right?

Yes, thats your socket but that picture you posted don't look like a socket 775 heatsink/fan. Get the correct one before using your computer any more.

Maybe you don't need a new heatsynk. Maybe you just a different thermal compound or something to make the heat get to the heatsynk better so the heat gets dissipate faster. Maybe arctic silver 5 or Zalman (which is better from what I here-never used it myself)

Look again at the fins on the heatsink beyond the fanblades: they're FILTHY! Get yourself a can of air and blast all that crap outta there and watch your temps drop! You may not have to spend a dime on a fan or heatsink!

i know they got dust, shame on me. But that dust might simply only put it doen 1 degree (and its actually not that bad, the picture seems worst) but i will clean it. Also, the fan is quite noisy....

If you want a new fan, get a dual ball bearing. they last longer and are usually quieter. (last longer + quitter = able to get a fast fan with low noise! which means more Cubic feet per minute AKA more airflow = at total result in less heat at a sound level that can't be beat).

ok...i'll llook them up! but hope they ain't expensive.... got a low budget! Very low! today i almost bougyt a portable DVd player, 10 inch, 100$. but the stroe was not going to gt it, so :( lol haha..... nyway, gotta look for that dual ball bearing. thx for the helps guys!
o btw overmaster, i took my heatsink off, and i cleaned it real good. no more dust. :D
Chow!

No more dust? Very good. Now take a look at your temps again. I had a filthy heatsink once, and blowing out the dust dropped the temps about 10°C!
