My DVD drive cannot detect blank DVDs

Ok, I have one problem. I have a Sony DVD RW DW-G520A drive in my laptop, and it burns CDs fine. However, when I inserted a blank DVD+R into the drive, it couldn't be detected. Furthermore, when I inserted the blank DVD, the drive changed from DVD-RAM Drive to CD Drive. Is there something I'm overlooking??

Well if Windows says you have a DVD-RAM drive, +/- disks shouldn't be the problem... What's your process for trying to burn something> What software do you use?

I think mine does the same thing... going to CD drive when I put a DVD in... but I've never even tried to burn anything with a windows utility... I always use Nero or some other program, and it works fine.

Well, when I burn CDs, I usually just drag and drop it into the folder. I had Nero and Sonic installed, but for some bizarre reason, the programs never seem to be able to detect my drive so I can't burn anything through those programs.

What kind of media are you using?

I'm using, or at least, attempting to use a Sony DVD+R 16x DVD.

Windows XP's built in burning capability only works with CD-R and CD-RW. To burn DVD-R, DVD+R, DVD-RW and DVD+RW, you will need a software package like Nero, Roxio, DeepBurner or upgrade your OS to Windows Vista.

OvenMaster is correct, I don't suggest Nero, that spiders into all of your media

No wonder. The thought of Windows XP's limitations never occurred to me. Oh well, I've got myself a Roxio. Seems to work fine now. Thanks! :D
