My DVD-ROM won't play my DVDs

I inserted a movie I bought into my DVD-ROM and now it will not play. I've tried using all of the programs that I have but they all say the same thing:

"Windows Media Player [or any other program] cannot play DVD video. You might need to adjust your Windows display settings. Open display settings in Control Panel, and then try lowering your screen resolution and color quality settings."

I tried doing what this pop-up says but nothing happens. The odd thing is that my computer used to be able play DVDs all the time. I have a codec, DIVX, and I just recently upgraded to Windows Media Player 11. Any thoughts? Thanks.
