My emachines m6805 keeps restarting!

Well, I just bought a used m6805 on ebay (turning out to be a big mistake) and it has some issues. Here is the detailed issue, if you don't want to read this long-ass post, skip down to the TO MAKE A LONG STORY SHORT paragraph and try to help me using that info.

THE DETAILED DESCRIPTION OF PROBLEMS
The first day I got it, it started up fine and all was well. After an hour I restarted it for some reason or other, and when it rebooted, things looked a little blurry. I checked the device manager and the ati graphics card had a problem, so I disabled it, tried updating the driver, etc but to no avail. I went about my business with the graphics still messed up, but then suddenly the laptop just restarted for no apparent reason. Before going back to windows it asked if I would like to start normally, in safe mode, or with the last known settings. I tried normal at first, but it wouldn't go into windows, so i tried the option with last known settings and it booted to windows, but the desktop screen was split into two. Anyway, after further use, the computer restarted again and would not go into windows, no matter what.

So I put in the restore disk, which I'm assuming formatted the drive and and completely reinstalled windows. So all was well again, graphics were working, wireless was working (this was also an issue at first as I could not get an IP address initially). So at this point I tried to install my external dvd burner and its software. I plugged it in, it was recognized and then I started to install the software, but there were all sorts of problems arising, nothing was actually installing successfully. The computer may have restarted at this point, it's hard to remember, but when I checked the device manager, none of the optical drives were working (interal dvd and external dvd burner). Again the computer restarted and I had to reformat and reinstall again.

After all this, whenever I tried to A) install the dvd burner software B) simply plug the burner into the USB port, C) install Norton Antivirus, or at other random times, the computer would either restart OR when I was told to restart after installing something, the computer would not reboot into windows either showing the screen where I'd choose between safe mode, normal mode, etc or just showing a black screen. I cant even get into windows in safe mode. I HAVE USED THE RESTORE DISK AT LEAST TEN TIMES IN THE LAST 2 DAYS IN ORDER TO GET BACK INTO WINDOWS. Sometimes the restore doesnt work (giving me an error message) and I have to restore immediatly afterward again!

TO MAKE A LONG STORY SHORT
This computer is just not stable. Whenever I make a change like intalling norton, burning software, external burner, etc...the computer restarts. Sometimes it restarts randomly. Sometimes if I am asked to restart after installing or making a change, it will not boot into windows after the restart. I have turned AUTO-RESTART off to read the message on the blue screen, and it says something like driver error IRQL something something, but I also got another one with a different message. I will write down the error message next time and post it here. I will also attempt to see what is wrong at startup with that "EVENT" thing in the control panel.

Any ideas? Is this a hardware or software issue? WHat diagnostics can I run to locate the problem? Help is greatly appreciated.

Wat driver is it having an issue with.. can you write down the code from the bluescreen.. We can tell you what it means if you give us the code.

we can work this out!

Here are the two error messages i get on the BLUE SCREEN OF DEATH:

IRQL_NOT_LESS_THAN_EQUAL

and

MEMORY_MANAGEMENT

so...do i have bad memory, bad cpu, bad heatsink, etc? All of the above?

this doesn't look good.

please post specific specs please. if it is a centrino, they are known to have issues with the intel pro wireless drivers that causes the computer to shut down and give the blue screen. if thats the case, boot into safe mode and go to administrative tools -> services -> wireless zero config and set it to automatic. also you can uninstall the intel pro wireless drivers.

eMachines didn't use centrino's in the laptops. (as far as I know they were either XP 3000+'s and up or the new A64's).

The IRQ message in my experience is usually a HDD problem or a corrupted MBR/Windows problem. It also happens with other things but that is the most common (byteman mentioned some of the other ones in a thread long ago and I have long since forgot). Have you tried re-installing windows with the actual windows XP disk (not the system restore one)?

It is an athlon 64 3000+.

One thing I noticed when I first bought is that this laptop does not have the original hdd, it was a toshiba 30gb instead of the oem 60gb. I was planning on upgrading to a better drive anyway, so we'll see what happens.

The only disk I have is the restore dvd that came with the computer. I'll try to get a copy of windows xp and load that.

Thanks
