My Friends PC Keeps Switching OFF!!

Im not too sure about this, but a friend of mine PC keeps going into standby mode every time they boot up. It happens at different stages in the boot up process for example on the welcome note, the desk top accounts page or even on the desk top it self. After a few attempts it will stay on for a while but after restarting the process starts over. I think it might be a corrupt application somewhere, maybe windows it self. But before I start uninstalling programs that are on the PC am I right to do so. befor the big Windows reinstall? or am heading in the wrong direction?

You may want to look at the possible hardware problems that could cause this. A corrupted bios or faulty memory can see Windows stall at times. Before uninstalling most of the programs installed on the system you may want to start reducing the number of them that start along with Windows to see if one had a bad installation.

The msconfig utility can be started at the Run prompt. Simply go through the startup group to uncheck a few at a time there. Any many by now should have jumped in with virus removers on the brain there while not completely ruling some malware out.

Yes thanks this is sound advice. I spoke more to my friend and as they exsplaned more about the problems it sounded like they needed to replace the grapics card so luckerly I had a spare one I tried it and that has done the trick. Like you said a hardware problem. thanks again
