My future gaming build

Hello there.

Just wondering if I could get some opinions on this build I plan on getting

The specs are as followed ( spaced for reading convenience):

CPU:Intel Core i7-3770K 3.5GHz Quad-Core

CPU Cooler:Noctua NH-D14 65.0 CFM

Motherboard:Asus Maximus V Formula EATX LGA1155

Memory:Corsair XMS3 16GB (4 x 4GB) DDR3-1333

Storage:Seagate Barracuda 2TB 3.5" 7200RPM

Video Card:EVGA GeForce GTX 780 3GB

Case:Corsair Obsidian Series 800D ATX Full Tower

Power Supply:SeaSonic 620W ATX12V / EPS12V

Optical Drive:Lite-On iHAS124-04 DVD/CD Writer

Operating System:Microsoft Windows 7 Home Premium SP1 (OEM) (64-bit)

Price comes to around $2556.

I'd go for a 4770K and a Z87 board. The Gigabyte GA-Z87X-OC would be a good board to look at. Newer than the 3770K and Z77.

I'd get 2x8GB if you want to go 16GB but you will need to get Windows 7 Pro or Ultimate if you want all 16GB to be recognised. Home only recognises up to 16GB including RAM on the graphics card, so since you've got a 3GB card, Home would only detect 13GB. Pro and Ultimate would detect all 16GB. Also get 1600MHz or 1866MHz RAM - 1333 is slow. Corsair's Vengeance and G.Skill's RipJaws-X RAM DIMMs are good.

Otherwise looks good mate but you could save some money. This is a pretty powerful rig and probably overkill for gaming. For example you could get an i5 4670K and 8GB of RAM and be good. But if you got the money, go for this. :good:

Since you have the money, why not get an SSD? The 256GB OCZ Vertex 4 would be a good choice (I've got the 128GB Vertex 4 and it's fast!) An SSD would seriously increase system speed and responsiveness.

Thanks for the reply! I'll definitely look into the board and processor a bit more then. Never even knew that windows home wouldn't recognize the ram :eek:! I'll have to upgrade. And for the SSD, I was considering it, but I like the 2TB space. I've actually never used an SSD, I've heard of the speed increase, but I really don't mind just a regular HDD. Again, something I'll have to look into a bit more.

Yeah you'll need to get Pro or Ultimate. The 3-pack likely has 3 licenses so it can legally be installed on 3 machines, I'd only bother buying the one license.

You can have an SSD and a hard drive in the same system. Nearly everybody who has an SSD has a large hard drive for storage and games. I do! ;) The speed increase is noticeable and you'll never want to go back to a hard drive as your boot drive.

I must have edited my post after you responded but I noticed you went for 1333MHz RAM. Get 1600MHz or 1866MHz 2x8GB from Corsair or G.Skill. Faster and not much more expensive. :)

Thank you very much for the feed back :)!! You've been a great help. I'll look into the RAM. And now I'm really liking the idea of an SSD. I'll have to buy one.

*EDIT: Would the Corsair Vengeance Pro 16GB (2 x 8GB) DDR3-1866 Memory do good?

Make sure you plug it into the SATA 6GB/s port on your motherboard and change the SATA type to AHCI in the BIOS before installing Windows on it. That way you'll get the best performance.

Would the Corsair Vengeance Pro 16GB (2 x 8GB) DDR3-1866 Memory do good?

In Denmark the H100i and the Noctua D14 cost the same (within a $5-10 range), so I would recommend getting that over the D14.
I personally use the D14, and it's great, but a 2x120mm water cooler with good fans is hard to beat with air cooling.
You can also buy an additional set of SP120s for extra performance, you definitely have room in the 800D.
Edit: Quick look at Newegg tells me the price isn't around the same in the US. H100i: $125 (discount: $104) versus D14: $96 (discount: $79)

Thanks for the input! I'll take a look at the H100i. I never considered going water cooled though. So I'll probably stick with the D14
