hey guys, so here's the deal...today, i got my new dvd-rw dl drive from newegg and I've been longing a new dvd-rw dl drive for a while since my current one had crapped out on me. just being the usual me, I tried installing it without turning off the computer (i've plugged in fans and hard drives this way soemtimes, but yes not recommended). so, i plug in the sata cable and then i tried plugging in the sata power connector (dvd-rw dl on slave power, and hard drive on primary power with another Fan connected). i hear a zap when the two connectors meet. reasonably expected perhaps...but then when i closed my case and went to check out my desktop, i found it dead frozen. I force restarted my computer and when I started up again, it wouldn't recognize my drive and displayed "no bootable device". HM???? Later i find out that my hard drive doesn't power on anymore. WHY?? My friend, who is an avid hater of Seagate says that Seagate sucks and that they are unreliable compared to WD. SO...I don't know what happened. Was is possible that the HDD expereiced a surge? Was there a fuse that blew when i plugged in that DVD-RW? Did I not have enough watts left in my PSU? Is Seagate a crappy manufacturer? I just got my HDD 3 months ago and It really sucks to find out that your new HDD just died on you. I don't know if i can fix it or get it thru warranty. What do you guys think happened? Criticisms as well as answers are gladly accepted.:)

1TB Seagate HDD (3 MONTHS OLD)
350 watt PSU
Pent 4 HYper threading processor
2GB 800mHz RAM

I often plug in molex accessories while powered on but I definitely wouldn't recommend doing it with a hard drive or a dvd drive. The snap was probably just a short on the 5v rail which caused the lockup, does anything on the same line of connectors power up? or is it just the hdd?

Most likely your hard drive is fried. As a test you can connect the drive to the different computer and check if the drive spins up. If not, you can try to replace it under warranty.

You only do that with hotswap devices, never ever unplug and plug up stuff while your computer is running. I have no idea why you would even want too! Since you said you have done this before it surprises me your computer made it this far. No telling what you shorted out. And seagates are good drives.

Yeah seagates are good
i hate having to restart my computer to install new devices but i would never ever plug anything in when it is turned on, its dangerous to yourself and your computer
what el gappo said may be the problem but i would imagine you have damged the hard drive with a power surge which means there is not much you can do and its highly unlikely seagate will replace it on warranty,
out of interest why dont you turn off the computer?
as StrangleHold said im surprised your computer works at all

Only the HDD isn't turning on, everything else is working fine.
