My 500gb backup got formatted by a virus or something. I want to write over it, and put backup stuff on it. Windows is not letting me drag files over to it. And Acronis True Image 9.0 is not seeing another connected hdd.
Though, windows is.

What do I do?

Thanks

Do you want to recover files from it or just simply wipe it clean? For actually recovering files there are a few live for cd Linux distros that can bail you out like Knoppix or ubuntu. For seeing a total wipe GParted Live for cd is the free Linux partitioning tool "Gnome Partition Editor". You will need a cd or dvd burner and a program to burn iso images to cd-rs in order to make up a bootable cd with the iso disk image.
http://sourceforge.net/project/showfiles.php?group_id=115843&package_id=173828 The o.3.3.0 version is the fifth down from the latest and is "platform independent".

For a free to keep burning software the free version of BurnOn has worked well for burning the GParted iso images onto cd-rs. You simply boot up to the main gui in order to select the partition/drive from a dropdown list of drives detected. The default will be the first drive on the system seen as HDa1.

you can also use BurnOn for the Knoppix or ubuuntu live distro iso files to make up a sefl contained bootable OS cd to rescue files from the 500gb.

Have you tried formatting it again with Windows? Right click the drive and select format... it will take a while.

It may not be a virus at all. In some cases you have to go into the device manager, right click on the model drive under disk drives, and select the uninstall option there. Upon a restart you usually see the new device detected message where you have Windows install the driver. This is more often used for optical drives but it's worth a try before a drive wipe.
