my dell inspiron 6000 which i bought a couple of years ago turns on but the actual screen of the computer wont. fyi: this is not the computer in my signature.

i have taken very good care of the computer IMO. but the hinge of the laptop seems to have cracked open. so i cant fully close the laptop screen/cover. this happened very randomly just like the problem about the monitor not turning on. i guess thats what i get for buying a dell.

im not sure if the crack has anything to do with the monitor not turning on. i dont really think it does because ive had the computer with the crack in it for a while without too many problems.

any suggestions as to how i can fix the problem?

First, if you have another monitor of some sort, try that. Confirm the computer is working at all.

If you do get video on your external monitor, I suspect your problem is related to the backlight/inverter. They sometimes go out due to a short or simply a failure in the inverter itself. Get the screen in some bright light and usually you can see the screen's still working.

If you don't get anything on an external monitor and can't see anything under bright lights, it's probably motherboard related. If this is the case, there's really not much you can do.

I will say, regardless how well you take care of a computer, they can give out. My grandparent's old compaq was a great example. It's in immaculate condition, but a chip began to warp/pull away from the board causing it to die.
