My Laptop Screen is permanently in power save

Hi All,
I have a Packard Bell laptop and am running XP on it. If I use the laptop on its battery power then the screen is "slightly darker" than when its running on mains power. When I plug the mains power back in then the screen returns to its full brightness. I had always put this down to some kind of power save function. The problem I have now is that my screen has become permanently “slightly darker” regardless of whether I am running from batteries or mains power. Any advice on how to rectify this would be greatly appreciated.

I have tried this, but can't find any option there which is relevent to my problem?
 
On your Laptop it should be a fn button the click the arrow up and down key to adjust the brightness or even use the Bios
