my laptop wont connect to the net

i dont know whats wrong i deff got a virus in my pc because i keep getting antivirus pop up blocks and stuff on it and it dl'ed a anti virus 2009 to my laptop but i was able to go online now i try to go on my computer and the wifi/wireless or w/e its called "light" is red and not blue, and i cant sign online or connect to the web ,it says a network plug is unplugged or some sh*t but im on a laptop


i have a warranty but i reformatted from VISTA TO XP PRO because vista didnt work great for me so i cant bring it to best buy ...

any ideas?
 
Find a friend who will go online and get you some anti virus and spyware protection. I prefer avg and adaware. If it still doesnt work call your manufacture and they can tell you where to access your card so you can turn it on or reformat it. If all that fails then that means your card went belly up, have seen it once before, just go buy a external wifi card.
 
As DMGrier just said get someone who has the internet to download the following antivirus programs Avg 8.0, Adaware 2008, also download Spybot Search and Destroy and C cleaner make sure you download the latest versions as they will have the latest updates and run all antivirus programs one at a time of course and just watch how many detections it picks up remove them and your laptop should be back to normal.
 
You'll need to get wireless drivers for your laptop. Remember, if it came with Vista chances are there is no drivers for XP, and even if there is hunting them down is going to be a pain.

What model laptop exactly is it? Any chance you could tell as the make/model of the wireless adapter as well?

im not sure what kind of wireless adapter it is im using i think its a " 10/100BASE-T Ethernet LAN (RJ-45 connector) 802". the internal wireless WLAN card built in i just connect by getting signal from my desktops router ,i had this laptop for over a year and i have all the drivers for windows xp on cd i been using the net on this thing for well over a year just fine.

i also ran a mcafee and ad aware 2008 full scan but only some spyware was detected and deleted and mcafee found no virus i will try to get those programs suggested

When the computer is up and running, you can usually disable the antivirus/security programs by right clicking their icon in the system tray (by the clock), going to something like "Exit" or "Disable". I think in McAfee, it makes you select a period of time. If so, pick "Until next reboot" or something. If it won't disable, completely disconnect from the net (Start > Control Panel > Networking > Network Connections, then right click and disable the wireless and wired connections), then uninstall the program. You can reinstall it after if needed.

You can download the free version of AVG from www.grisoft.com. The AVG 8.0 version is the latest. That'll pretty much kick any virus you've got on the system.

As for the wireless adapter, its probably a problem with software (eg virus has corrupted the driver, Windows not recognizing it). It could be a hardware issue (its physically broken), but with a virus, it's more likely to be that.

If you can't remove the virus using any of the programs suggested, then the only thing I can think of would be to run AVG on any of the files you need to keep (to make sure their clean), back them up, and then perform a fresh installation of Windows XP.

As an extra, Vista isn't so bad now that SP1's out. You might want to give it a go. Compaq's usually come with restore disks, and that'll contain the operating system.
