My new build is done! - Few Questions

Hey everyone! I finally built the computer in red in my sig. I know some of you have better computers, but to me, this computer is just holy shit fast. And im getting another gig of ram and a 8800gt. I do have some questions though. What do i need to change in order to be able to overclock past 2.7? When ever i go to 2.8 or higher, the computer just shuts off almost immediately? The only thing i changed was the fsb. Another thing, how come when i plug in something into the front USB ports, the computer shuts off and only the case and fans work? And one last thing, is 36c idle and 45 load ok temps for a q6600 @ 2.7 without any thermal paste?

Thanks,

If it won't boot at 2.8 then you need to raise the CPU voltage by just a little bit, I'm guessing your Gigabyte allows you to raise the voltage by small pre-defined incraments. Take the stock reading, find it on the menu (there will be lots) and go to the next one up and see what happens. This is based ont he fact that my motherboard is a Gigabyte so yours may be different.

You installed a CPU without thermal paste? I am guessing that it had the thermal pad on the fan you used.

Not having thermal paste or a stock thermal pad is just asking to fry your CPU. Especially if you are overclocking. The more you over clock, the hotter your cpu is going to get.

yea that i know. im not a dumbass. I used the stock Intel Cooler. It had some gray pad on the bottom of the heatsink. I guess thats a thermal pad?

Also, i went up to 1.3 for the voltage and still the same thing. How far should i go?

Yeap, I replaced that with some Zalman STG-1 and it now idles at 2.8GHz at the same temps it was reporting on the Intel stock stuff at 1.86! I'd look into some better cooling because that cooler isn't good enough for an overclocked Core 2 Quad.

Overheating will damage the sillicon, baring in mind the tracks are billionths of a metre thick the tolerances are very low in CPU's. The tops you want to hit is 60, any more and you may do some damage.

60 what, celcius? At 2.7 i idle at 36. is 36 ok? I tried to go to 1.35, but it doesnt want to work. Probably the not amazing power supply that came with the case is not good enough. But i think 2.7 is great. Will i notice a diff from 2.7 to 3.0?

Those temps are hot in my opinion. I like things cold, But for stock cooling...pretty good. Go put your finger on the northbridge heatsink, i double dog dare you!

1) We measure in celcius

2) Get a new PSU..why on earth are you using a case psu,YOU'RE GETTING AN 8800GT!

3) You won't notice a huge difference between 2.7ghz and 3.0ghz

Yeah dude, I would buy a new PSU asap. Bad PSUs cause so many problems, and are accountable for killing components.
