My New Desktop (And Some Back Story)

Howdy people, this is my first post on Computer Forum, so please be forgiving. :P

Well I used to be computer literate, but I just couldn't keep up with all the new hardware and software flowing into the market, so I gave up.

Which soon after I felt the need to upgrade my EXTREMELY outdated and slow as a snail computer. I can't remember the specs for that, but it was a early 2000 model.

So I went through my friend to get a new computer, his dad is friends with a guy who owns a computer part retailer called Xon Computers. This was maybe late 2004 - early 2005.

Of course me knowing squat about computers, I just picked out parts that sounded good and slapped them together, I was also on a budget of around $600, so I wasn't going to get a great computer, but decent for the time.

So I ended up getting a:
  • 2.5ghz Intel Celeron
    512mb Ram
    256mb NVIDIA GeForce 6200
    80GB Hard Drive
    The rest was all basic computer parts

But the trouble started as soon as I got it, it resets at random once a day, and sometimes before it resets, whatever program/game is running has error messages and all sorts of bad things coming up.

And it's progressively been getting slower to the extent the games I could run on it before, will run with excessive lag, or just won't run at all, like BF2 for example, used to run on low graphics, a bit laggy I must admit, but it ran none the less, but now the lag is so bad that I can't even play.

So I've finally decided I want to upgrade again, and hopefully future proof myself a bit at least for the newer games coming out like BioShock.

I've put together a list from Xon Computers once again, going through my friend.

And I researched all the parts, to check if they are compatible and will work well together, and as far as I know they will work perfectly in tune.

Here's the new list:
  • Motherboard - Gigabyte GA-965P-DS3P
    CPU - Intel Core 2 Duo E6600
    HDD - 320Gb Seagate 16bit
    GFX Card - 256Mb GF8600 GT
    RAM - 2x 1024gig DDRII RAM 667MHz

As well as a Power Supply and such, I will work out all the little stuff later, or maybe you could suggest some good parts to go with the ones already mentioned.

The friend I'm going through is a computer whiz, and he said that my computer should be pretty beasty for what I want, which is to be able to play BF2, Oblivion and later down the track XBOX 360 games on my PC, especially BioShock.

What do you think?

Thats not the Best GPU for BioShock.

Hard Drive, Are you going With SATA or IDE?

Also, You mean 16MB Cache, not 16Bit. :D

Also, How quickly do you fill up your Hard drives?

I have 3 x Of those 320Gb Sata2 Hard drives, and i have about 40Gb Free.

So it Does fill up quick.

Those parts will all fit together well.

What brand Ram is that?

And What power Supply are you going to be using?

If you have a bit more of money, i would go a better GPU.

Just to be more Future Proof.

Also, How quickly do you fill up your Hard drives? Not too quick, all I have is music which I have a fair bit of, 20gig, and the rest is dedicated to games and Photoshop stuff that I do, if I manage to fill 320gig, I'll just buy another Hard Drive.

What brand Ram is that? That's a tough one, it doesn't say, but I'm sure it would be a quality brand, what would you recommend?

And What power Supply are you going to be using? That's also tough, seems it doesn't have Power Supplies on the price list, any you would recommend?

About the GPU I was a bit scared about that, I know the 8600 is a quality GPU, but I didn't think it would stand the test of time for the newer games.

I would have got a 8800 but I heard the 8800 requires quite a power supply, and it's a bit on the pricey side.

Also, because the Quad 6600 and the Dual 6600 are close in price, which would be better to get? I heard the Quad doesn't work with some older games, so I decided against it.

But I'm open to suggestions on that, as I would really have no idea.

I would go with the Core2Duo, Not the Quad.

Not many games at all will utilize the Quad.

Ok, You have a good choice of harddrive.

Ram, I Anything like Corsair, OCZ, Kingston ect . . I have had no Problems with, Brands like Memtek, Elixer, HP i would stay away from if possible.

For the Power Supply, A 400 Watt will be sufficient.

The 8800 Series will not require that much of a difference from the 8600 Series. . .

I would recommend a Decent Power supply, We recently had Big storms here on the sunshine Coast, one of my Cheap Power Supply's Blew and took out a hard drive with it.

So a Decent power supply will definitely be worth it.

What Computer places do you have available too you?

And ah yes the beauty of the quote button, it's been a while since I've lurked forums.

Core2Duo it is, seems more efficient anyway.

Getting that RAM should be easy enough, and I'll make sure I get a good Power Supply.

The 8600 will be efficient for what I want for now, I'm pretty sure I can have 2 GPU's on the motherboard anyway, so if that time comes I'll put another on.

And the computer places I have available, well I'm using 'Xon' as my main supplier, as I can get a discount and I know if anything goes wrong I will be able to get it fixed, other than that I have no idea. :P

[EDIT] Also does that motherboard have 4 ram slots? Or just 2?

Yes, Core2Duo is the Way too Go.

You will definitely Benefit from a good Power Supply.

Yeah I've seen the Motherboard before, I reckon it looks nice, and I thought it had 4 RAM slots, would I benefit from 4gig of RAM? Or would it be overkill.

I'm just really afraid about it being good that's all, because as soon as I got my current computer I was disappointed, it was way worse than I expected.

I want this new computer to blow my mind. :D

[EDIT] It also says that my motherboard is made for overclocking, with a Core2Duo CPU, I've done it before but it didn't show any major improvements, but overall would it be worth overclocking?

I've heard people reaching from 2.4ghz to 3.0ghz, that seems like a spectacular change, especially for a dual core, that would be uber fast from the sounds of it?

With The New Core2Duos, Its not about the Clock Speeds.

Its the Architecture.

It Absolutely Blows all Previous Chips out of the water.

No Chip even comes remotely Close

This New Computer will BLOW YOUR MIND

Just so you know, (this may be different for Xon), But Over clocking Your CPU Voids your warranty.

You will not need to Over clock for a long Long Time.

I would stick with 2Gb For now, you can always upgrade in the Future.

I am running Vista with 2.50Gb, and no matter what i do, it will only ever utilize about 1.6 - 1.7 Gb of it.

I got it too 1.7 While :

Running:
- Photoshop CS3
- Visual Basics
- Oblivion
- Firefox with 19 Tabs
- Msn Messenger
- Watching Remember the Titans
- Doing a Word Document
- Talking on Skype
- Compiling a Music Clip using Adobe Audition.

Thats What I Call Multi-Tasking :D

So 2 Gb will be fine.
 
Holy crap man, that's multi-tasking of kings.

Photoshop and Oblivion alone would seem to be more than enough to kill a computer.

But that....that is beautiful man, I have tears coming to my eyes right now.

You have put faith into my heart, faith of a epic computer!
