i just bought a pre owned hp compaq dc7900 the other day for $75.

it has:

intel vpro core2 duo e8500@ 3.16ghz cpu
2gb ram
80 gb hard drive (hard disk is wiped off!!)
dual layer dvd rw drive

is this computer any good?
which operating system do i need to install?

any ideas or suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

XP would run nicely, as would Windows 7 32-bit and Windows 8 32-bit.

What are you going to be doing with this PC?

will use computer for general internet browsing and for word processing. will also takes pictures off of my camera and put it on the computer.

Yeah any one of those 3 OSes will be fine. I'd go with 7 or 8 though purely because they're newer and more modern than XP.

You probably want to stick with 32-bit having only 2GB of RAM. If you can, it may be an idea to upgrade to 4GB because then you can use a 64-bit OS.

Your HP dc7900 supports DDR2 667MHz and DDR2 800MHz.

If you wanted a RAM upgrade, you'd be best buy off buying this http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16820145195 yeah DDR2 is expensive these days and these are only 667MHz DIMMs but they'll work.

Here are the different configurations you can have http://h20000.www2.hp.com/bizsuppor...t.jsp?prodSeriesId=3785403&objectID=c01869333 I'd stick those 2GB sticks in slots 2 and 4.

great! will newegg ship to uk? how much am i looking at paying for windows 7 and 2x2gb sticks?

Ah you're in the UK? Sorry I saw from your first post '$75' and I thought you were American.

I'm a Brit and I always buy from Novatech, so I'd recommend taking a look at them. I always seem to get next day delivery even though I don't pay for it. :D

Windows 7 64-bit http://www.novatech.co.uk/products/software/gfc-02050.html

Here's Windows 8 64-bit if you're interested? http://www.novatech.co.uk/products/software/operatingsystems/wn7-00403.html

Here's the RAM http://www.novatech.co.uk/products/...2-pc2-6400/800mhz/bls2cp2g2d80ebs1s00ceu.html I'm pretty confident that will work. This should definitely work http://www.novatech.co.uk/products/components/memory-pc/ddr2-pc2-6400/800mhz/ram-804gk.html

how much is this computer worth with windows 7 64 bit and crucial ballistix sport 4gb (2x2GB) ram? i also have a copy of office 2013 ready to install.

Maybe just under £100 or so... maybe more in the £60-80 range. The hardware is kind of dated now.
