My Puter Is Dead

My computer is a second hand, custom built deal, and the PSU is dead. What was put in is a 250W, but I intend to upgrade the hardware. I want to a quick diagnostics before I buy new stuff, so for a computer in which a 250W was chosen, will going up to a 300W do damage with current hardware?
 
Not at all. The components will only draw the power they need to run. Likewise, not having enough power will mean the machine will shut off suddenly or the power supply will fail. They also fail over time, or it could have been faulty. Please list the specs of your computer so we can find you a decent replacement.
 
Well, the RAM is one 512MB DDR, the motherboard looks to be a regular (though old as hell), however the heatsink on the CPU will not come off. I am not sure if it is a screw or clip so I am not sure what processor it is running. And the video card is some off brand I have never heard of. This computer was built at least 7 years ago.

But, as I said, I intend to upgrade it for recent games. For now I just want to be able to turn it on and figure out if anything else is toast.
 
Sounds like a new system may be needed, but you could use use a program to dispay the component models. CPUID/Speccy/HWPRO.
 
Or download PC wizard in my sig, install it, run it and go to FILE, SAVE AS, click ok. Copy the text out of that saved file into here.
