My processor speed is 1/2 of what it used to be...

My PC has been running very slowly for the last few days. I finally discovered what the problem is...

My CPU is an athlon 2400+. Why is it that it says my CPU is only running at 995MHz?

I have done a complete, updated system scan with McAfee, spybot and adaware and found no spyware or viruses.

What might be the problem? Thanks for any help!
 
Goto BIOS and make sure you multiplier and core clock are set properly at 133x15
 
Before I start to f*ck with my BIOS, please tell me exactly what I'm supposed to be doing here. Last time I messed with my BIOS I couldn't use my PC for several days.
 
Yer supposed to check that your core clock is set to 133Mhz and that yer multiplier is set to 15.0.
 
Ugh. Can you please tell me exactly how to do that. I know that I should press delete after rebooting but what do I do from there?
 
Well I went into BIOS and saw that my core speed is running at 1.648. I was unable to change it. In fact I was unable to select anything by moving the arrow keys. I went into 'CPU setup' and was unable to adjust anything by moving the arrow keys either left or right.
 
I have the ECS K7S5A Pro, so it can't be that different...

go into BIOS > CPU PnP Setup > CPU Frequency

press Page Up or Page Down to change the value

set it to 133

That sounds more like your Vcore (which is supposed to be 1.60-1.65v) ... are you sure you're reading it right? ... i would tell you exactly what to press but ive not dealt with an ECS board since maybe 2003
 
j0hn00, if you have an ECS K7S5A then how on God's Earth can you run an athlon 3400+? I thought the most it could take is a 2400+!?!?!?

OK, first off, CPU frequency is already set at 133MHz. Even if it wasn't, I wouldn't be able to select the CPU frequency option anyway. Upon entering CPU setup I am unable to select anything because all the options are greyed-out. I press the arrows keys up, down, left and right but nothing happens.

Hmmm...I think something is seriously wrong and it might not be so easy to diagnose.

As I said, I did a full virus scan with McAfee and two spyware scans; one with spybot and the other with adaware.

It can take any Socket A CPU, but will limit the speed due to its 133MHz FSB.

As for your problem... try clearing the CMOS.

Well I did try to take all advice pal but as I said before, all options are greyed out in CPU setup.

How do I reset the CMOS?
 
Ok, check your mobo manual for a CMOS reset jumper, if it doesnt have one then just take the round flat battery out of the mobo for about 5-10mins (when the PC is turned off and unplugged completely obviously).
 
Under the AGP slot and to the right of the first PCI slot, there should be 3 pins labeled JP1 with a little plastic jumper around the two right pins. Disconnect the motherboard from your power supply and move the jumper to fit around the two left pins. Leave it there for 5 seconds, then move the jumper back to the right two pins. Connect your motherboard to your power supply and boot up. Your BIOS settings will have been reset back to factory defaults.
 
I thought that the jumper only needed to be taken off momentarily? I wasn't aware that it needed to be placed over the two left pins.
