my Q6600

I finally OC'ed my Q6600. I changed the FSB from stock 1066 2.4ghz to 1300 at 2.9ghz (I thought it would be 2.7ghz, but dxdiag says 2.9).

I ran a stress test for an hour and everything was fine. Cpu temperature maxed out at 55C. Then I bumped up the FSB to 1350 so it would be at 3ghz. I started up my computer and I got a huge windows error. It wouldn't boot up. I changed the FSB back down to 1300 and it works now.

Is 2.9ghz my cpu's limit, or should I increase the voltages? If so do I increase the cpu core voltage, fsb voltage, or both? And if so how much?

AS LITTLE AS YOU CAN AT A TIME! And if, say, three voltage bumps don't stop the crashes - you've almost certainly hit your ceiling.

Depends. What's the rated FSB of your board? IF it's 1333/1600 or higher, you shouldn't have anything to worry about. If it's 1066 you may have to bump up your FSB volts - but generally you should try upping your CPU volts first, and as I said before, as little as possible at a time.

actually, if a voltage increase doesnt make it boot, then its probably the wrong type of voltage that you need.

if you're running your memory below its rated speed (which you should be) then its probable that your front side bus is bottlenecking, and you should up that voltage. if at that time none of the voltage increases make your system stable, then you've hit your ceiling.

you should check vCORE and vDIMM and see what the multiplier on the RAM is. take some pictures of your bios screens with FSB/Freq/voltages and RAM settings please.
Try it. That should be a fairly decent board, I can't see why you couldn't go higher. Bump the voltage up a notch and see if that does it.
yeah you're safe with 1.425 vcore with a G0 stepping quad on good air cooling so don't be scared, your stress test temp is promising i've seen them hit high 60's and be stable.

My friend who has a Q6600 and went up to 3.2ghz said I actually need to raise my vcore voltage. He said raising it from 2.2(4) or w/e it is to 2.3 should be enough to get me up to my 3ghz goal. I know 2.9ghz isn't much lower than 3ghz, but I want to hit 3ghz. 2.9 seems like a failure that could have almost been a win.

And don't say 3ghz opens up a whole new ladder of speeds, I tend to overdo things and I'd rather not with this >_<

Looking around there seams to be a number of people who are having OCing problems with their Q6600.

Can you post a shot of CPU-Z please?

Try getting the latest Bios update for your motherboard. Also your max vcore for the Q6600 (G0) is 1.5 or 1.6 do not go above this.

I heard that the latest batches of the Q6600's have been bad OC'ers. People have been avoiding lately them because of this... I just hope when I get one, they've sorted them out.
