My Screen Recorder

G'day all, My first post here so I hope I don't break any of the rules.

I need a bit of help and am hoping someone in this community can provide it.

OK first a bit of history.
I take lessons online and, because these are quite expensive, decided to record them so I could replay them later (due to my very short memory span.)

After checking out a few ended up buying "My Screen Recorder" by DeskShare.

I am communicating with my instructors through Skype and am using a Microsoft LifeChat LX-3000 headset/microphone.
The program captures the video of my PC screen and MY voice perfectly but there is no audio from my instructors. Obviously this makes the session worthless unless I wish to sit there and listen to myself talk.

DeskShare promise Technical Support in under 24 hours but, although I have been sending support requests/emails daily for the last three weeks, I have received only one reply. I was told to ring a telephone number in New York which I did but got a recorded voice saying "all of our support staff are busy etc.," Rang four days in a row and got the same answer.

OK sorry! This wasn't meant to be a complaint against them but rather a plea for help. Does anyone have this program and suffered/fixed the problem or have any ideas on how I could fix it.
I'm not really all that flash with the technical side of computers so one syllable answers would be appreciated.

Thanks

Hey,

I'm no expert but it seems that the recording device selected is your headphone/mic on your computer. In order to record your instructer's voice you will need to select stereo mix as recording device. Now if you want both your's and your instructor's voice recorded at the same time, You might have to run another application to record the other.

example: "my screen recorder" you say can record your voice beautifully. So you could use Audacity to record the instructer's voice.

Is this what you were after?

Oh , just thought of another option. Unsure if it would work, but worth a shot.

If you go into the settings for recording device, click on properties and click the listen tab. There is an option to listen to device. Meaning you will hear yourself through the speakers. This might record both audio (yourself and instructor) through just the one program "My Screen Recorder" if the speakers are selected to record the audio in this program.

Hi Mike, Thanks for the feedback.

Not sure what "Audacity" is! (Another software program?)

On “Recording Devices” on my PC it has Headset Microphone and Stereo Mix. So if I set the default as Stereo Mix you think it might work?

By the sounds of it, under recording devices it it selected to your headset. Thus the reason you can hear your voice. So i believe if you select your headset and click on properties, go to listen tab, check the box that says "Listen to this device". Then click ok and select stereo mix as default recording device, then you should be able to hear yourself talking through your speakers. And when you click record it should record any sound that comes out from your speakers.

Audacity: http://audacity.googlecode.com/files/audacity-win-2.0.2.exe

it's a third party recording program. So your program could use the headset to record your voice, and this program can be used to record the sounds of your speakers (instructor's voice). Might just have to go into the settings of each program and select the recording device.

If you still are confused, just let me know and i'll take screen shots and show you what i mean. I am hoping the first one works.

LOL when it comes to computer software I am always confused.

Thanks mate I have done as you said now will just have to wait until I can talk to someone to see if it works.

Your help is much appreciated.

OK you were 100% correct about what would happen when I did as you suggested in the headset microphone properties box. My voice did come out through the speakers but it still did not record the other persons voice.

Here is something strange that might help. Although my voice came out through the speakers my instructor's didn't so maybe we are on to something.
What do you think would happen if we did the exact same thing but in the Realtek High Definition Audio Stereo Mix proprties box?
If I did that what should I then select under "default playback device?"

Because I know absolutely nothing about these things I am always wary of messing around with them.
With no disrespect intended if I download the Audacity program can it screw anything up on my PC.

If you want to record both yours and your instructors voice you will have to have one program (such as the screen capture program) record your microphone and another (such as audacity) to record your speakers. I was hoping the first solution might work, but since it didn't you will need two separate programs.

In the first program (screen capture program) you can go into the preferences and select the recording device to either Microphone or Stereo Mixer. Then in the other program (such as audacity) you can go into the preferences and select the recording device to the other choice of which you selected with the previous program.

Unfortunately I believe this is the only way. Audacity is a free program that will not wreck your computer. If you want you could always pay for a program that will do the same. Just any audio recording program.

let me know what you went with and worked. I'm curious.

No good news unfortunately Mike. We spent nearly the whole hour of the lesson changing settings and in some nothing was recorded at all but never was my instructor's voice captured.

Looks like I need to get the other program. When I selected the Realtek Digital output as the default it sounded like machine gun fire coming through my speakers (and really loud.)

Looks like that's end of story so thank you for all your help.

I use My Screen Recorder too. It works beautifully - recording what comes out of my speakers. You do need to run the Audio Tuning wizard and select to record from speakers. If there is an issue, try upgrading your sound card drivers. Some of the older drivers don't allow the speakers to be recorded.

Your settings are wrong. Anything that goes through the sound card and is output to the speakers can be captured by Audacity. That is the best free program to do the job. You simply have your settings incorrect.

I agree with Okedokey.
I have used Audacity many times to record sound from my speakers and it would always record everything regardless wether it was my voice or from someone else from let's say...Skype or both in the same time.

So check your settings one more time and also be sure that MICROPHONE BOOST options are turned on.That option can be found either in your Windows VOLUME options or on programs like Realtek HD audio manager (if any).

By the way for my screen recording I use a software called BB flash back recorder.Even though I still use a very old version 1.4.5,it works perfectly fine and it can record both if you of course adjust settings properly.
